WHAT IS MOHAWK DAY?

Students of the Mason City Community School District need your help. You are probably aware of the state’s decision to cut our general school district fund by 11.5% this school year alone. Next year may be just as devastating.  School officials and elected board members are doing all they can to trim expenses.

One expense that is difficult to trim is transportation. It is a hardship for our district to transport students within our CIML conference. Each event whether it’s for sports, music or academics, is at least 90 miles away and many times much farther. To help assure that our students continue to have equal access to all school sponsored events, local volunteers have created a new district-wide fundraising committee.

The Fundraising Committee was formed in January to assist in coordinating district fundraising in areas that will benefit all students.   One exciting event being planned is an annual Mohawk Day, which will be a community-wide fundraising event. The first Mohawk Day will be held in conjunction with the Fall Festival of Sports, Friday, August 20 at Mason City High School. Mohawk Day will continue with a day of activities for all ages on Saturday, August 21.

The goal of the committee is to raise money for K-12th student transportation.   This would include: out-of-town athletic events, extra-curricular activity travel expenses, such as elementary through high school level academic competitions, CIML Art, Speech and Drama, and Band and Vocal Music competitions.

The committee hopes to raise $100,000 for athletic competitions, $100,000 for extra-curricular activities, and $50,000 for student book rooms at the elementary buildings. With the budget cuts in the general fund, there is no money to support these programs. For some students, these activities are the main reason to come to school.

We would like to encourage the community to come to the event, and bring your families to join in the fun activities planned over the two days.
